History of Old Lexington
Baptist Church
In the northwestern part of
Lexington County, South Carolina, on the south side of Lake Murray lies a
peninsula containing several thousands of acres of land bounded on the north by
Lake Murray, on the east by Big Hollow, on the south by State Highway 378; and
on the west by Big Rocky Creek. On this peninsula is located a church, now
known as Old Lexington Baptist Church.
Old Lexington Baptist Church was
legally incorporated on the 20th of July, 1948 and is the oldest church in the
Lexington Association.
In 1852, the church was built. The church then
was named Lexington Church. It was a large framed building, with one section
provided for slaves, who held their memberships with their masters. This church
went by the name of Lexington till a Baptist Church at Lexington court was
organized, after that period it was known as Old Lexington. Later the name was
changed to Saluda-Lexington. It went by this name for a number of years.
However, in the event of having conventions or associational meetings it was
very confusing for delegates and representatives from Baptist institutions to
locates the place. Therefore, it was changed back to Old Lexington.
In
the year 1907, the church was pulled around at a different angle and completely
renovated- adding a recess and vestibule. On January 4, 1953 ground breaking
services were held for the beginning of the new modern building. The building
is constructed principally of red brick, concrete and steel and is as nearly
fire proof as a structure of this kind can be built.
Our new building
is an expression of gratitude to God for his wonderful goodness to us. Never
have we in our long and interesting history had an opportunity to be so
thankful and grateful to our blessed Redeemer as today. Glory to God forever,
Amen
